Culture Is Capital: Why Meet The Investors Begins at GIFTS 2026

Budaya Adalah Modal: Mengapa Meet The Investors Dimulai di GIFTS 2026

An APKJ Insight | Insight APKJ

Yogyakarta has never been short on ideas. It has more campuses than most provinces, a cultural heritage that gives it a global identity, and a generation of creators, craftspeople, and founders who work with remarkable ingenuity. What Jogja has long lacked is something simpler: rooms where these people actually meet the people who can fund, buy, and scale what they make.

This month, UGM said it plainly. At the press conference for the Global Innovation and Future Technology Summit (GIFTS) 2026, Prof. Wiratni, Director of UGM's Directorate of Business Development, described the city's problem as one of disconnection, not of talent. Talented people have been working in parallel for years without ever crossing paths. At APKJ, we recognized that diagnosis immediately. It describes the creative economy we have been organizing for years.

That is why we are proud that Meet The Investors (MTI) kicks off inside GIFTS 2026, held on 21–22 October at the Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas (GIK) UGM.

A Theme That Reads Like Our Manifesto

Tema yang Terbaca Seperti Manifesto Kami

GIFTS 2026 carries the theme "CULTIVATION: Culture–Innovation–Business Acceleration." For a creative entrepreneurs' association, the order of those words matters. Culture comes first, as the starting point for innovation and business, not as decoration added at the end.

GIFTS 2026 mengusung tema "CULTIVATION: Culture–Innovation–Business Acceleration."

This is the thesis APKJ has worked from since the beginning. Our members don't only sell products. They carry motifs, techniques, stories, and communities. When culture is treated as an asset instead of an aesthetic, it becomes investable.

Inilah tesis yang dipegang APKJ sejak awal. Anggota kami tidak hanya menjual produk. Mereka membawa motif, teknik, cerita, dan komunitas. Ketika budaya diperlakukan sebagai aset, bukan sekadar estetika, budaya menjadi layak investasi.

What's Happening at GIFTS, and Where MTI Fits

Apa yang Terjadi di GIFTS, dan Di Mana Posisi MTI

GIFTS is a joint effort by UGM and Kadin DIY to bring together innovators, researchers, industry, investors, prospective off-takers, and strategic partners. The programme includes:

Rangkaian acaranya meliputi:

  • Innovation Marketplace: 50 curated innovations displayed in open "islands," where visitors can talk directly with the innovators instead of walking past booths.
  • Business Matchmaking Arena: roughly 90 innovations paired with businesses over both days. Sekitar 90 inovasi dipertemukan dengan pelaku usaha selama dua hari acara.
  • Investor Speed Dating, Collaboration Class, Coffee Talks, and a Business Talk Show. Investor Speed Dating, Collaboration Class, Coffee Talks, dan Business Talk Show.
  • MTI Deal Lounge: Meet The Investors' dedicated space for conversations that are ready to move toward terms.

The groundwork has already started. The September–October online pre-events cover research-to-business grooming, pitching strategy, sharpening business targets with Kadin, and the Sharing Senja series with Meet The Investors.

Persiapannya sudah dimulai. Rangkaian pre-event daring pada September–Oktober mencakup pendampingan riset menuju bisnis, strategi pitching, penajaman target bisnis bersama Kadin, serta seri Sharing Senja bersama Meet The Investors.

Starting MTI inside GIFTS was a deliberate choice. Investors want deal flow that has already been prepared, and innovators need investors who understand their context. GIFTS supplies the curation and the convening power. MTI supplies the investor relationships and keeps those relationships going after the event ends.

Four Insights for Creative Entrepreneurs

Empat Insight untuk Pengusaha Kreatif

1. Downstreaming doesn't always mean commercialization. 1. Hilirisasi tidak selalu berarti komersialisasi.

One of the most important points from the press conference was Prof. Wiratni's reminder that hilirisasi is "tidak selalu ujung-ujungnya duit": it isn't always about money. Some research exists to solve public problems, such as waste, and still needs financing to get into the field. For the creative economy this is familiar ground. Much of what our members do preserves cultural knowledge, sustains artisan communities, and keeps local supply chains alive. The capital that fits this work is often different from a classic equity round. It can take the form of impact funding, revenue-based financing, off-taker agreements, licensing, or partnerships where the return is shared value. MTI's role is to put those options on the table.

2. IP is the bridge between the campus and the creative market. 2.

University research becomes valuable when it is protected, packaged, and licensed. The same is true for a batik motif, a craft technique, a brand, or a content format. Many creative businesses sit on intellectual property they have never registered or valued. Kadin DIY described its curation lens as looking for innovations that are ready to be downstreamed from a business perspective, not ranking which is "best." In practice, readiness means clear ownership, a clear business model, and a clear first customer. Creative founders who can show those three things will have far better conversations with investors.

3. Preparation beats pitching. 3. Persiapan mengalahkan pitching.

The pre-event series is designed so that the main event can focus on negotiation and agreements rather than introductions. This matches MTI's philosophy: relationships come before transactions. A founder who has attended Sharing Senja, tightened the pitch, and clarified the ask arrives at the Deal Lounge ready to talk terms.

4. Look for where culture meets the value chain. 4. Temukan titik temu budaya dengan rantai nilai.

Take cocoa, one of UGM's five innovation priorities for 2026 alongside the seed industry, disaster resilience, water, and waste. UGM runs its own chocolate processing facility, supported by about 170 hectares of cocoa plantation. A cocoa ecosystem needs more than agronomy and processing. It needs origin storytelling, packaging, branding, retail experience, and tourism, and that is creative-industry work. The biggest opportunities for our members often sit inside other sectors' value chains, where design and culture turn a commodity into a product people remember.

What APKJ Members Can Do Now

Yang Dapat Dilakukan Anggota APKJ Sekarang

  • Join the Sharing Senja sessions with Meet The Investors ahead of the main event. [Registration link / schedule] Ikuti sesi Sharing Senja bersama Meet The Investors menjelang acara utama. [Tautan pendaftaran / jadwal]
  • Prepare a one-page deal brief covering what you've built, who pays for it, what you own, and what you need (capital, a buyer, or a partner).
  • Visit the Innovation Marketplace even if you are not exhibiting. Some of the best partnerships between creative businesses and research teams begin with a conversation at an island.
  • Think in collaborations, not only fundraises. An off-taker, a licensing deal, or a co-development partner with a university lab can be worth more than a cheque.

Building the Room, Keeping the Door Open

Membangun Ruangnya, Menjaga Pintunya Tetap Terbuka

Jogja doesn't lack ideas. It lacks rooms where ideas meet capital, markets, and one another. GIFTS 2026 builds that room. Meet The Investors, organized with APKJ, keeps its door open after the event, so that the connections made in October turn into deals, partnerships, and ventures over the following months.

See you at GIK UGM on 21–22 October.

Sampai jumpa di GIK UGM pada 21–22 Oktober.
